Josep Samitier, sub-director of the PCB and director of the Nanobioengineering Research Laboratory, Manel Puig, Carole Rossi and Ignasi Garcia awarded the “2003 City of Barcelona Technological Investigation Prize

Josep Samitier, Manel Puig and Ignasi Garcia, researchers at the (CREBEC) and members of the Department of Electronics at the Universitat de Barcelona (UB, University of Barcelona) and Carole Rossi, researcher at the in Toulouse, have been awarded the "2003 City of Barcelona Prize for Technological Investigation" for the project entitled "Drug delivery microsystem based on pyrotechnical actuation". The jury has conferred this prize in recognition of their contribution to a non-invasive alternative for drug injection.

The most innovative concept of this project, which is financed by the European Space Agency, is the combination of pharmaceutical chips and the use of small pyrotechnic injection devices that are controlled electronically to facilitate the administration of drugs to patients at risk. One of the most direct applications of this approach is its use in space as a first aid system activated by remote control to reanimate astronauts who lose consciousness.
