José Luis Montero (IThinkUPC): “In a medium- to long-term strategy it is always cheaper to prevent an incident than to resolve it”

In this interview, José Luis Montero, Business Manager of Cybersecurity at IThinkUPC, explains several critical aspects of cybersecurity. Montero highlights the importance of protecting companies’ data and systems, the most common cyberthreats and how organisations can prepare to defend themselves against these attacks.

For Montero, it is very important to keep in mind that every company depends on its information systems, because without them, companies cease to function. The quantity and quality of data is equally important and therefore data must be well protected.

We have threats and we have adversaries, no one is safe. It should be borne in mind that attacks are not targeted. They are often indiscriminate and everyone must be prepared.”

According to Montero, there are three types of threat:

– Loss of service
– Loss of data and intellectual property
– Loss of reputation

It is always more expensive to resolve an incident than to prevent it. If we think of it from a short-term cost strategy perspective, we can think of the investment as entailing additional costs. However, in a medium- to long-term strategy, it is always cheaper to prevent an incident than to resolve it,” he said.

The first thing to do is to think about what we have, i.e. what is the level of maturity of our organisation. This means an assessment of the things we already have in place for the next step, i.e. identifying proposals for improvement”, added Montero.
