The UB Scientific and Technical Services and GlaxoSmithKline resume collaboration

The Scientific and Technical Services of the Universitat de Barcelona (), through its Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and in situ Molecular Recognition Unit, and the pharmaceutical enterprise GlaxoSmithKline () Spain have resumed collaboration in order to continue working on a project on candidate anti-malarial drugs.

Entitled “Characterization of the effects caused by candidate anti-malarial drugs in Plasmodium falciparum”, the project is coordinated by the scientists Domingo Gargallo and Esperanza Herreros at GSK’s Drug Discovery Centre for Diseases of the Developing World, located in Tres Cantos (Madrid).

The continuation of this collaboration is the result of the data obtained through the techniques that the SCT-UB TEM Unit, managed by the researcher Carmen López-Iglesias, has been fine-tuning over the last year. The results have allowed GSK Spain to begin the pre-clinical phase with one of the anti-malarial candidate drugs.

Furthermore, the advances brought about by the joint work of the two entities have been determinants of the 2004 Project Award, given by Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV) to GSK Spain for the work “Pyridones”, led by Gargallo. MMV is a non-profit foundation and is responsible for managing the largest portfolio of anti-malarial drugs.
