The scientific assessor to the PCB, Joan Massagué, will head a new oncological research programme at the Institute of Biomedical Research (IRB-PCB)

The Institute of Biomedical Research (IRB-PCB) of the Parc Científic de Barcelona (PCB, Barcelona Science Park) will extend its investigation lines through the addition of an oncological research programme on metastasis, which will be directed by the investigator Joan Massagué. This information was made public after a meeting held at the Palau de la Generalitat (seat of the Autonomous Government of Catalonia), in which Joan Massagué was received by the President, Pasqual Maragall, who was accompanied by Carles Solà, Marina Geli and Antoni Castells, ministers of Universities, Research and the Information Society, Health, and Economy, respectively.

During this meeting the Generalitat pledged to invest 28 million euros during the period 2005-2008, which, according to Joan Massagué is the amount required to set up a programme of “maximum international relevance”. Of the total investment, 9 million euros are earmarked for equipment and 19 million euros for operational costs (which are in addition to the costs that the IRB-PCB generates at present).

According to Joan Massagué, the programme, which is called the Applied and Translational Oncology Programme (ATOP), will include between 8 and 10 research groups that will work in collaboration with those of the Cancer Biology and Genetics Programme that he himself heads at the in New York. In addition, the group directed by Josep Baselga, head of the clinical oncological service at the , will also form part of this programme. The first step will be to grant the Institute legal status in order to initiate the recruitment of the researchers required to complete the programme.
