The Scientific and Technical Services of the UB are awarded the ISO 9001 standard

The (SCT) of the Universitat de Barcelona have been awarded an ISO 9001:2000 standard for their quality management system. This certificate has been granted by the company Applus in recognition of support services rendered to public and private investigation, in addition to analytical services, technical services, among others. The SCT are the first research support services within a Catalan university to receive this internationally recognized certificate and one of the first to attain it in Spain.


The ISO 9001 certificate comes as the result of an initiative that began four years ago with the establishment of a Quality Assurance Unit (UGQ) in the services. This unit acts as a consultancy service on issues such as the introduction of quality management systems for the SCT and also for users of the UB and other private and public institutions.

The ISO 9001:2000 standard establishes the requirements to be fulfilled by quality management systems and focuses on the principle that a desired result is achieved more efficiently when activities and related resources are managed as a process, thereby achieving customer satisfaction and contributing to an improvement of the system. For this purpose, the processes and their interrelations have been defined, indicators for the same have been established and followed up, and data on the level of customer satisfaction have been collected. All this information has been used to further the objective of service improvement.

To ensure the success of the introduction of a quality management system, it is essential that the managerial team shows commitment and leadership. In addition, success is also dependent on the participation of all staff at the centre. In the case of the SCT, the Quality Assurance Committee, which is chaired by the director of the services and involves the participation of a representative from each unit and the promoter of the centre, has been crucial in the attainment of this international standard.

Having been awarded the ISO 9001 standard, the SCT now have a strategic advantage in their response to the enterprises they serve. Furthermore, this standard allows the establishment of a framework for the management of quality in benefit of the university community.
