The Mediterranean diet in children helps to prevent cardiovascular risk

A study performed by the cardiovascular risk and nutrition research group of the IMIM (Institute of Research Hospital del Mar) and the Community Nutrition Research Group – Foundation for Nutritional Research (FIN), based at the Barcelona Science Park, shows that young people who follow a Mediterranean diet have a smaller waist circumference that those who do not follow this type of diet. The study –published in the International Journal of Pediatric Obesity (doi:10.3109/17477161003777417)- also reveals that the accumulation of fat in the abdomen over certain limits is a negative metabolic profile indicator- correlated with the risk of suffering a cardiovascular disease- not only in adults but also in children and young people.
