The Bioethics and Law Observatory presents the document «Nanotechnology and Global Bioethics»

The presentation of the document «Nanotechnology and Global Bioethics», developed by the Bioethics and Law Observatory (OBD) –based at the Barcelona Science Park- under the coordination of Maria Casado, director of the OBD and holder of the UB UNESCO Chair in Bioethics, and Maria Jesús Buxó, professor of anthropology at the UB, and member of the OBD, will be held next Tuesday October 5 at 11 a.m. at the Fèlix Serratosa Hall of the Barcelona Science Park (PCB).

It is the first publication in Europe that specifically addresses the transversal nature of nanotechnologies and that establishes specific recommendations aimed at the five key sectors involved –research centres, companies and industries, public authorities, media and citizenship- in order to ensure that scientific knowledge and the assessment of nanotech applications are carried out within a framework of safety and responsibility.

Over the course of this event the OBD will also present a book titled «Bioethics and Nanotechnology», the latest work from the collection «Bioethics and Law Materials », published by Civitas Thomson Reuters under the direction of Maria Casado. It is a collective and multidisciplinary work that defines the main bioethical problems involved in nanoscience research in relation with health risk, integrity, equity, safety and environmental impact.

Both documents have been developed within the framework of the research project «Nanobiolaw: bioethical, social and legal implications of Nanotechnologies» (SEJ2007-61210/JURI) funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation, and which the Bioethics and Law Observatory has been working on since 2007. Within this field, and since 2004, the research group of the OBD has also been participating in the network of European excellence in Nanotechnology «Nano2life», in the project «A Network for Bringing Nanotechnologies to Life», and in the managing Committee «Wordpackage on Ethics» (WP4) of the Barcelona Science Park.

The Bioethics and Law Observatory of the University of Barcelona (OBD), based at the Barcelona Science Park, was created in 1996 to address the need to analyse, from a scientific and multidisciplinary point of view, the ethical, social and legal implications of biotechnologies. The OBD Opinion Group has developed several documents on current topics for which there are different opinions in society and in the different scientific communities involved. All of these documents are available in Catalan, Spanish and English in a PDF format.
