Pere Roca-Cusachs receives ICREA Academia program distinction for the second time

Pere Roca-Cusachs, leader of the Cellular and Molecular Mechanobiology group at IBEC, based in the Barcelona Science Park, has been awarded for the second time the “ICREA Academia” distinction by the Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies (ICREA). The researcher and professor at the UB received the grant in the Life & Medical Sciences category.  This five-year award will enable him to enhance the impact and international visibility of his research.

The ICREA Academia call provides financial support to teaching staff from Catalan public universities, allowing them to increase their research dedication by reducing their teaching responsibilities.

“The ICREA Academia award is a crucial tool for university professors to maximize their time and resources dedicated to research. It is both an honor and a responsibility that ICREA has recognized the value of the research conducted by my group”, says Pere Roca-Cusachs.

Roca-Cusachs leads the Cellular and Molecular Mechanobiology research group at IBEC and holds a full professorship at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the University of Barcelona (UB). His research focuses on elucidating the mechanisms by which cells detect and respond to mechanical stimuli – such as forces or tissue stiffness – which regulate processes like embryonic development, tumorigenesis, or wound healing.

The ICREA Academia program aims to retain research talent in Catalonia. Grants awarded by the Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies (ICREA) recognize the research trajectory of teaching staff active in Catalan public universities and in an advanced phase of their research career. In the latest call, the fifteenth edition, a total of 40 experts from various fields of knowledge have been awarded, and each will receive 40,000 euros per year for a period of five years.
