Launching MedTeX, the accelerator for startups in health technology

The Barcelona Science Park (PCB), the Bosch i Gimpera Foundation (FBG) and the Barcelona Entrepreneurship Institute (BIE) are giving the go ahead for the MedTeX acceleration programme, a ground-breaking initiative —co-financed by ACCIÓ— to boost emerging enterprises with an innovative business project that shows a clear international commitment within the field of medical technologies and eHealth.

Within the framework of this initiative, eleven start-ups (that have existed for less than 5 years) will receive free training, mentoring and advice from 23 mentors and experts in strategic areas such as team management, sales and marketing, commercial law, financing and internalisation, for a period of 5 months, within the strategic hub known as Barcelona Science Park, an international benchmark in promoting innovation in life sciences.

The programme also provides support services for obtaining public and private funding; networking activities that promote direct interaction with the 110 member organisations in the PCB Community as well as national and international R&D networks; access to cutting-edge equipment and infrastructure; and special conditions for any businesses that wish to establish themselves in their areas, with the aim of benefiting from an ecosystem that actively contributes towards the acceleration of their business.

The eleven chosen companies in this 1st edition of the programme are: ADmit Therapeutics, Cornea Project, CreatSens Health, Kiversal, GlyCardial Diagnostics, MJN Neuroserveis, Moirai Biodesign, Onalabs Inno-Hub, Tecnologia Regenerativa QREM, Sens Solutions and USMINA.

The MedTeX programme presentation —which brought together around fifty people yesterday from academic, scientific and corporate spheres in the Dolors Aleu room within Barcelona Science Park— was carried out by Ignasi Belda, CEO of Barcelona Science Park; Jaume Valls director of the Barcelona Entrepreneurship Institute (BIE) and M. Carme Verdaguer, managing director of the Bosch i Gimpera Foundation (FBG), the three organisations promoting this initiative.

“Barcelona Science Park is strongly committed to the field of medical devices”, assured its CEO, Ignasi Belda during the MedTeX presentation. “We want the Park to become the hub for this economic sector that is experiencing such growth, in the same way as we did with the biotechnology sector twenty years ago now. For that reason, we have promoted several initiatives in this field, such as the MedTeX accelerator and the implementation of shared scientific services specialising in medical devices, among other projects”.

According to M. Carme Verdaguer, Managing Director of the Bosch i Gimpera Foundation: “In the past 15 years, the Foundation has participated in the creation of more than 35 spin-offs and, together with Barcelona Science Park, has been a pioneer in implementing different bioincubation projects. Now, we want to offer a good opportunity for boosting businesses within the field of medical technologies with the MedTeX acceleration programme. This is a sector that is experiencing rapid growth and is contributing towards improving our quality of life”.

“The initiatives that relate to biomedicine and medical technologies are considered to be a benchmark in the Universitat de Barcelona (UB). This is due to the importance of the sector”, highlighted Jaume Valls, director of the Barcelona Entrepreneurship Institute. “In this context, the projects related to medical devices and digital health are playing a leading role that must be harnessed: first, because they enable researchers from different fields to get involved and second, because they are shaping successful, innovative business models that can be replicated”.

Entrepreneurs who have been chosen for this first round of the programme will also participate in this event. They will deliver an elevator pitch lasting 3 minutes to present their business project.
