Iproteos wins the 2017 of Senén Vilaró Prize for best innovative company

The biotech company Iproteos, located a the Barcelona Science Park (PCB), has won the 2017 Senén Vilaró Prize for best innovative company, one of the four awards conferred by the Board of Trustees of the University of Barcelona (UB) and the Bosch i Gimpera Foundation (FBG). The ceremony for the awards was held yesterday at the Aula Magna of the Historical Building of the UB.

 

Iproteos is a biotechnological spinoff of the University of Barcelona and the Institute of Biomedical Research (IRB Barcelona) that focus its activity on research and drug development for the treatment of uncovered medical needs. IPROTech technology represents the scientific core on which the spinoff carries its activity out. This technology allows researchers design future drugs based on peptides, called peptidometics, and enables researchers to speed up their research and get new molecules which can become future drugs. In 2016, biotechnology raised € 1,5 million in private capital. With this money, Iproteos reached the € 3 million in external capital with public and private investments. 

The Awards of the Board of Trustees of the University of Barcelona (UB) and Bosch i Gimpera Foundation (FBG) are granted in two categories: the Antoni Caparrós Prize for the best knowledge transfer project, and the Senén Vilaró Prize for the best innovative company. Since its creation in 2008, this prizes are aimed at increasing the social returns of knowledge acquired through academic study and research, highlighting the value of knowledge and technology transfer and innovation projects, driving the creation of innovative knowledge-based companies, giving recognition to the capacity for innovation of these companies, and instilling a culture of entrepreneurial spirit in the UB group.

The rector of the University of Barcelona, Joan Elias, the acting president of the Board of Trustees, Joan Corominas, and the director of Bosch i Gimpera Foundation, Carme Verdager, awarded the prizes to this year’s awardees at the Aula Magna of the Historical Building of the UB. In this ceremony, Professor Guillem Anglada Escudé, doctor in Physics by the University of Barcelona and lecturer of Astrophysics at the Queen Mary University of London, gave a conference. The journal Nature listed Anglada among the top ten most important scientists in 2016 for having led the team that discovered the nearest habitable planet.
