Intelligent Pharma Wins Recognition for Social Responsibility of Its Labour Conditions

, located in the Barcelona Science Park, has recently been hailed for the social responsibility of its labour conditions. The recognition came at the ninth annual Best Business Initiatives Awards 2008, given each year by the Diputació, the government of Barcelona province. The company, which develops smart software programs for the design of new drugs and biotechnology, was also nominated as one of the most innovative firms of the year in Barcelona province.

Intelligent Pharma offers its team a productivity incentive programme, which each member of the multidisciplinary group of twelve researchers can adapt to their individual needs. “Incentives are quantified in monetary terms, but payment can be translated into whatever the professional wishes, including, for example, additional holidays, temporary reductions in workday length, training and development or any other arrangement that can increase flexibility in labour conditions,” explained CEO Ignasi Belda. In addition, working mothers are offered the opportunity to work from home if they wish.

Intelligent Pharma also provides staff four hours each week for self-directed learning in the areas and technologies which staff consider most useful for their careers in future, and the company encourages collaborative cross-training in order to facilitate the exchange of knowledge among team members. “If the company can adapt to each individual’s needs, then staff develop a greater sense of involvement in the company and that plays out in greater profits both in the short-term and in the long-term,” added Belda.

Founded a little over a year ago, Intelligent Pharma is a start-up company from the university environment, focusing on chemoinformatics and bioinformatics. Currently, it is part of the PCB-Santander Bioincubator, a project which aims to foster the development of new biotech firms.

Intelligent Pharma’s service offering includes computer-aided drug design, virtual screening, compound library management and computational toxicology, among other areas. The company, a pioneer in Spain, aims to slash the costs and time periods required to develop new drugs.

The company won the twelfth edition of the Bancaixa Young Entrepreneurs Awards and has received ICREA backing, R&D&I grants and CIDEM funding. At present, Intelligent Pharma enjoys support from the Generalitat of Catalonia through its ACC1Ó Agency and from Barcelona Activa for assistance in business growth.

More than one hundred candidates from 38 local organisations participated in the ninth annual Best Business Initiatives Awards, presented by the Diputació of Barcelona province.
