Xavier Trepat, researcher of IBEC, receives the ERC Starting Grant

Xavier Trepat, senior researcher of the Cell and Respiratory Biomechanics group of the Bioengineering Institute of Catalonia (IBEC) –located at the Barcelona Science Park- and the Department of Physiological Sciences of the University of Barcelona, is one of 17 researchers in Spain (eight of them Catalan) who have received the Starting Grant", awarded by the European Research Council (ERC) this year. Trepat will receive, together with the other winners, an average of 1.5 million Euros to fund his research work over the course of the next five years, which focuses on developing sensors that aid the detection and study of the physical mechanism of cell movement inside the human body.

The ERC Starting Grants are aimed at promoting innovative projects presented by scientists who are aged 40 and under. They consist of funding instruments that aim to launch the careers of the most promising researchers in the first phase of their academic trajectory: the average age of beneficiaries is 36. In this second call 2,503 researchers submitted their proposals. The European Research Council will fund only 237 of these projects, with a total estimated budget of 325 million Euros.
