Xavier Fernández Busquets and Marc Cirera win the first edition of the Instagram contest ‘At day at the PCB’

NanoChristmas trees with lipoballs, by Xavier Fernández Busquets, head of Joint Joint Unit IBEC-CRESIBand Marc Cirera, scientific illustrator, was the winning photograph of the first edition of the Instagram contest 'Un dia al PCB' (A day at the PCB). The objective of this competition –organized by the Barcelona Science Park and addressed to over the 2,000 professionals that make up the PCB Community–  is to create a collective mosaic with the best snapshots of the day-to-day at the Parc throughout the 24 hours of any given day.

The winning photograph -awarded with a Samsung Galaxy tablet- was the most voted by Instagram users with 23 likes. The photo depicts an image of liposomes, obtained by means of cryo-transmission electron microscopy (TEM), on the underlying carbon grid pattern, artistically colored to represent two trees ornamented with many Christmas balls on a snowy night, from an original composition of spherical shapes, of different sizes and colors, with a very intense light-shade contrast that provides volume and depth.

The jury -composed by Raimon Solà (photographer), Jordi Sopena (Director of Communication of the University of Barcelona), Raul Deamo (technician at the Audiovisual Communications area at the UB) and Adela Farré (Director of Communications, Marketing and Promotion at PCB)- praised the creativity, visual impact, and artistic and technical characteristics of the photographs, highlighting that  their “high quality and originality made the selection of the winning image very difficult.A cryoTEM image of liposomes
