UB and Biotech Development sign an agreement to train entrepreneurs in the field of biomedicine and healthcare biotechnology

The University of Barcelona (UB) and the start-up Biotech Development, based at the Parc Científic de Barcelona, have signed a collaboration agreement to develop two training programs for the creation and management of biotech-based companies and knowledge transfer in the biopharmaceutical sector: the Master's Degree in Applied Business Management and Knowledge Transfer in Biomedicine and Health Biotechnology and the ‘Postgraduate Course in Scientific Management: Management and Professional Development in Biomedicine and Health Biotechnology. Both programs will start in 2014-15 academic year as master's degree and postgraduate courses of the UB´s Faculty of Biology.

With the addition of these two courses to the training portfolio offered by the Faculty of Biology, the University of Barcelona aims to strengthen its capabilities in the field of training and promotion of entrepreneurship and innovative thinking among university students, encouraging them to accept, as main actors, the challenge of these changes.

“These two programs are intended as an educational reference and a tool for the empowerment of talent and entrepreneurship. This is a pioneering initiative in the university environment, which strengthens the innovative training model of the University of Barcelona, as it complements the training in the life sciences with a business vision, while promoting the incorporation of new positions in the industry and collaborating in the promotion of innovation and modernization of the productive system”, said Dr. Joaquín Gutiérrez Fruitós, dean of the Faculty of Biology of the UB.

Biotech Development, a company specialized in the provision of consulting services for knowledge transfer and development of postgraduate academic programs will undertake –through its strategic ‘Business School’– the management, organization and coordination of these two masters and postgraduate courses, and will also provide the necessary academic program and human resources.

The start-up was created in 2013 by a young entrepreneur biologist, Juan Garcia Soria, in response to a clear need in the Spanish biotechnology sector: building an effective and dynamic bridge between university and business and generating new collaboration partnerships between public-private institutions for the transfer of healthcare research outcomes to the market as financial realities and new drugs for the benefit of society. To carry its business project to term, the company diversifies it activity into three distinct business lines: ‘R+D+i Consulting’, ‘Knowledge Transfer’ and ‘Business School’.

“The leitmotiv for the creation of Biotech Development has been to contribute to the value chain of the development process of new drugs by investing in its most valuable asset, the human capital. As a business school, we have created these master’s and postgraduate courses in order to enhance mixed career profiles in science and business by enabling professionals to apply their knowledge in life sciences from a management perspective and to provide them with the capacity to transform research projects into business realities. The purpose of our academic programs is to train professionals with an economic-financial and management vision in the private area of health biotechnology and biomedicine and to provide them with adequate training in business areas for knowledge transfer and use into the biopharmaceutical industry”, said Juan García Soria, CEO of Biotech Development.

The master’s and postgraduate courses will be conducted in collaboration with ESEI International Business School in Barcelona, an educational institution with over 20 years experience. This business school will provide the facilities and technological resources necessary for the proper operation and implementation of the academic programs.

Since its creation, ESEI has always been committed to the need for the collaboration between the university and the industry and, therefore, participates in the initiative undertaken by Biotech Development and the University of Barcelona, which has resulted in the creation of these two programs for the training of new professional profiles aimed at the biopharmaceutical sector, which bring the social, economic and business reality closer to this specific area of knowledge”, said Jordi Estera, director of ESEI.
