Third edition of the Contemporary Science Fair

On 3 and 4 May, the "La Pedrera" building (Centre Cultural Caixa Catalunya - Sala Gaudí: Pg. de Gràcia, 92, Barcelona) hosted the 2005 Contemporary Science Fair (VCC'05), an event organized by the Parc Científic de Barcelona (PCB, Barcelona Science Park) with the support of the Fundació Caixa Catalunya, the Catalan Society of Biology and the Ministry of Education and Science. In its third consecutive year, the fair, which, in each of the two previous years received more than 2,000 visitors, provides a new meeting point for scientists and society.

The fair seeks to inform the general public about the research currently underway in laboratories in Barcelona, through contact with scientists, and to provide the opportunity for the public to directly experience the scientific method. For this purpose, research instruments are set up at the fair for two days and the general public is invited to use them, thereby promoting further communication between the public and scientists.

The fair presents the scientific knowledge that corresponds to controversial stages in which it is still being consolidated and has not been assented by the scientific community; information that rarely reaches the society at large.

In addition, the fair presents the research carried out in the Metropolitan area of Barcelona by exhibiting 10 projects from several centres and R+D institutes. These projects covers topics as diverse as cell stress, climatic studies, future energy sources, telemedicine, marine micro-organisms, forest fires, simulation programmes for respiratory allergies, virtual(computer-generated) people and analytical methods for the study of DNA.

The fair, which is directed at the general public, is free of charge and is open from 10h to 14h and from 16h to 20h. For more information go to: .
