The PCB is to Host the Catalan Institute for Climate Science

This week saw the founding of the Catalan Institute for Climate Science Foundation (IC3). IC3 is a new research centre that has been jointly promoted by the regional Catalan government (Generalitat de Catalunya), the University of Barcelona and the Barcelona Science Park, where it is to be housed. The director of this new centre is Dr. Xavier Rodó, who currently runs the Climate Research Laboratory at the PCB (LRC-PCB) and is a researcher with the Catalan Institute for Research and Advanced Studies (ICREA).

According to Rodó, “the objective of this new centre is to further our knowledge of climate dynamics and prediction, in order to increase society’s capacity to adapt and respond to climatic variations and to mitigate possible negative effects.” The main lines of research of IC3 will be based, among others, on: climate modelling and theory; climate change and its impact; seasonal climate predictability; reconstruction and modelling of the climate in the past; and, the analysis and validation of climate simulations.

“The creation of IC3 is a project that has been gestated at the Barcelona Science Park, where an interdisciplinary group of researchers have worked in this field for the past nine years, and make up the so-called Climate Research Laboratory at the PCB (LRC-PCB),” explains the director-general of the Barcelona Science Park, Fernando Albericio. “The support of the Generalitat together with that of other institutions, including the PCB, will allow it to grow and become a first class reference centre for climate studies, and a reference both at the national and the international levels. Furthermore, it will fill the gap that currently exists in research centres that are specialized in this field throughout the Mediterranean area,” he adds.

As well as scientific research, IC3 hopes to liaise with the whole of society and, therefore, the project also foresees the creation of: a laboratory for education, dissemination and public information; a laboratory for the development of applications and services; and, a laboratory for adaptation and mitigation strategies.
