On 26 October, the Generalitat de Catalunya (Government of Catalonia) announced this year's winners of the Narcís Monturiol Medals for scientific and technological merit. This year two institutions and thirteen people have been awarded this recognition, among these María Casado, PhD in law, director of the (OBD), located at the Parc Científic de Barcelona, and professor of philosophy of law, ethics and politics at the Universitat de Barcelona (UB, University of Barcelona).

María Casado has been recognised for “her pioneering research in bioethics, which, based on the respect of internationally recognised human rights and not on creeds, follows pluridisciplinary and secular approaches and is generally widely accepted”. In addition, the director of the OBD coordinates the Bioethics, Law and Society Research group of the Bioethics and Human Rights Network and the Network for the Joint Teaching of Bioethics. María Casado’s expertise is reflected through her participation on several ethics advisory committees in Spain and abroad.

Within the Grup UB, the Generalitat de Catalunya has also awarded the Narcís Monturiol Medal to the senior professor of Botany, Xavier Llimona, and senior professor of Ecology Joandomènec Ros. In addition, the Narcís Monturiol Plate has been granted to the Institut d’Investigacions Biomèdiques August Pi i Sunyer (IDIBAPS).

The Narcís Monturiol Awards date back to 1982 and were established to recognize people and organizations whose activities have made a significant contribution to the scientific and technological progress of Catalonia.
