The call to participate in the 6th edition of the Summer School on Medicines (SSM6) opens

The 6th edition of the Summer School of Medicines (SSM6) will take place at the Parc Cientific de Barcelona (PCB) from 6 to 11 July. The SSM6 is organized by the PCB, Biocat, CataloniaBio, University of Barcelona, University Toulouse III – Paul Sabatier, CAPTOR Project–Investissement d'Avenir, INNABIOSANTE Foundation – Toulouse Cancer, University of Montreal, University Drug Research Group (GRUM), InnDEA València Foundation, University of Bordeaux, University of the Balearic Islands, Biotech Cluster of the Balearic Islands (BIOIB) and Campus Vida. Jordi Quintana, director of Business Development and Innovation, and head of the PCB´s Drug Discovery Platform (PDD-PCB) is, as in previous years, head of the Scientific Organizing Committee. The registration deadline is June 30.

Drug production is a complex process involving a range of actors, from researchers at public institutions to highly specialized industry professionals. Since 2009, the Summer School of Medicines has been growing, year after year, as a reference program in the biopharmaceutical sector because it adds value and because it meets a training need in this setting. The SSM is one of the most innovative and results-oriented initiatives offered internationally, since it covers the entire value chain in drug development, from inception to launch into the market, through the experience of leading research centers, management and business knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry and the vision of the administrations.

As in previous editions, the SSM6 program is interdisciplinary and aimed at students in the field of life sciences (graduate, master, doctoral and postdoctoral students), researchers and professionals in the biopharmaceutical industry and regulatory agencies, among others. The program includes a 40-hour training based on expert presentations, successful case studies, seminars, and visits to companies and research institutes. The faculty is composed of leading experts from the biopharmaceutical industry and research institutions from Canada, France and Spain, contributing knowledge, critical insight and experience as a result of a strong track record in the areas of research, administrations and business management.

Tranfer of life sciences research to the market place

The Summer School of Medicines is part of the Transbio Sudoe European project that aims to promote research in health sciences, aimed at promoting the transfer of research in health sciences to the market. The initiative, coordinated by Biocat in Catalonia, as principal partner- will feature the participation of 32 entities from southwestern Europe, including the Parc Cientific de Barcelona, Science Park of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (PRUAB) and the Catalan Association of Biotechnology Companies (CataloniaBIO).

The project is part of the Territorial Cooperation Program of the southwestern European (SUDOE) Space, whose mission is to support regional development through the co-financing of cross-national projects through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the main instrument of the European Union to promote economic development in the most disadvantaged areas.

Transbio is the continuation of the project, which, between 2009 and 2012, provided numerous activities with a significant impact on the innovative setting of five European regions (Catalonia, Midi-Pyrénées, Lisbon, Aquitaine and the Valencia local community): twenty cross-national cooperative projects, mapping technology platforms related to research in life sciences, high-quality scientific meetings, a white paper of good practices, and training programs for young researchers, such as the Summer School on Medicines, among others.
