The 5th grant call for the project «Research in Secondary Schools» is now open

The Barcelona Science Park has announced the fifth grant call aimed at researchers who wish to tutor secondary school students during their research projects. The initiative is included within the program , developed by the PCB, and its objective is to promote research within the educational community and to foster scientific vocations amongst the youth. Application deadline is May 4.

The program offers secondary school students help from a Barcelona Science Park researcher who provides them with bibliographic guidance, as well as the possibility of carrying out practice sessions at the Park’s laboratories for approximately one year.

Specifically, 40 collaboration grants are offered to provide support to 40 secondary school research projects of the Higher Education Institutes (IES) that participate in this tutoring program. However, students will continue to have their teacher’s guidance, who will be the head of the project.

Tutors will also be guided by Josep Maria Fernández-Novell, of the Metabolic Engineering and Diabetes Therapy Group of the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona), who has a wealth of experience in guiding research projects and in the field of secondary education and who will serve as coordinator.

Once this call is closed an informative meeting will be held for those teachers who are interested in the project. The meeting will take place May 13 at 5 p.m. and its objective is for teachers to learn about the research lines that are carried out at the PCB and about the tutoring researchers’ experiences. Following the meeting, there will be another call for students to present their research project proposals, which will end May 20. Finally, tutors will be assigned to different students.

After one year, once the research projects have been completed, the three best projects will be selected. Awards will be given to these projects during the “Live Research” fair that will take place in spring 2010 at the Pedrera of the Caixa Catalunya bank.
