The 13th edition of the «Spend the Summer at the Park» starts

The welcome ceremony of the 13th edition of the practicum program «Spend the Summer at the Park» was held this Tuesday, 1 July 2014. The aim of the program, organized each year by the Parc Cientific de Barcelona (PCB) and addressed at second cycle university students, is to bring the research environment closer to students from all universities around the world through their participation in projects carried out in groups, research centers and companies based at the PCB.

The opening ceremony was led by Jesus Purroy, Technical Director of Science and Technology Services of the PCB, who explained to the students the mission and structure of the Parc as well as the operation of the practicum program. Next, Anna Vilches, Technician of the Joint Prevention Service of IBEC-IRB-PCB informed the attendees about aspects relating to laboratory safety and waste management policies.

The duration of the «Spend the Summer at the Park» lasts 2-3 months from July to September, with a minimum commitment of 5 hours per day. Practicum sessions are performed with the help from research groups that focus their activity mainly in the field of biomedicine and biotechnology. This year 25 young people have registered to attend the program, 22 of which are from Spain and the rest from Italy and Turkey.

Students will join three technology platforms at PCB – the Drug Discovery Platform (PDD), the Experimental Toxicology and Ecotoxicology Unit (UTOX) and the Combinatorial Chemistry Unit (UQC). They will also work in different research groups of the Institute of Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC), the Institute of Molecular Biology of Barcelona (IBMB-CSIC) and the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona) The companies Intelligent Pharma, SOM Biotech, Mind the Byte and Readycelll will also host these young students.

This is the thirteenth consecutive year that the Parc Cientific de Barcelona offers this activity. In previous editions have featured the participation of over 300 students and according to evaluation polls, both young students and tutors are very satisfied with this collaboration initiative, a fact confirmed by the long-term contact the students keep with the research group they worked after they completed their practicum period at PCB.
