Strong presence of the Barcelona Science Parc in BioSpain

From 19 to 21 September, the Bilbao Exhibition Centre (BEC) in Barakaldo has hosted BioSpain 2012, the number 1 event in biotechnology in southern Europe and one of the world summits for business development and partnerships. The sixth edition of this meeting has broken records of attendance with over 1,500 delegates, 761 companies from 25 countries and 216 exhibitors (29% more than in 2010), of which 25% are based in science and technology parks. The Bioregion of Catalonia has been represented by the participation of 200 professionals from 119 companies and organizations, of which, more than 20% are located at the PCB.

This year, the organizers of Biospain 2012- The Spanish Association of Biocompanies (Asebio), the Society for Competitive Transformation (SPRI) of the Basque Government and the BioBasque Agency- have doubled the space allocated to partnering, a meeting point where more than 4,500 partnering meetings have taken place (the last edition prompted 2,200 meetings), which makes it the 4th largest partnering event per number of international meetings.

In addition to the exhibitors area and the scheduled bilateral meetings, BioSpain has enabled business delegates attending the event to participate in the Investment Forum, which enjoyed the presence of 32 investment companies from different countries (Spain, Switzerland, United Kingdom, France, United States and the Netherlands, among others) and 30 companies and entrepreneurs that presented their business plans.

BioSpain 2012 also hosted side events such as a BIOTECH 2012 –a biotech scientific congress organized by the Spanish Society of Biotechnology (SEBIOT)– and the first Employment and Training Forum in Biotechnology, as well as plenary sessions and conferences about theme conferences about different topics with national and international speakers.

25% of BioSpain 2012 exhibitors were organizations located in parks that are members of the Association of Science and Technology Parks of Spain (APTE), which clearly shows the potential of the biotech companies with presence in these clusters.

“The participation of the Barcelona Science Park at BioSpain has been very positive. Our stand has been a showcase of innovations arising from the park, both with regard to companies, institutes and research groups based at the park as well as with regard to the technology platforms it offers. Biospain also has given us the opportunity to meet with more than 70 national and international companies with the aim of establishing new collaborations “- said Ignasi Heras, coordinator of Innovation at the PCB.
