Start-up of research activity in the Nano2Life network through the participation of the UB-UPC Nanobioengineering Laboratory

From 2 to 5th February, the French town of Autrans will host the first meeting for researchers in the European Nanobiotechnology Network of Excellence "Nano2Life". The Parc Científic de Barcelona (PCB, Barcelona Science Park) participates in this project through the , a member of the Catalan Reference Centre for Bioengineering (CREBEC). The network project is included in the 6th EU Framework Programme and has financial support of 8.8 million euros.

Over four years, some 230 European researchers from diverse fields of biology, chemistry, physics and engineering will work together on research, technological development and training in the field of nanobioengineering, with the objective to establish a European Institute of Virtual Nanobioengineering. Nano2Life groups 24 entities, which bring together European expertise, with the goal to make Europe a strong competitor of the USA and Japan and an international leader in nanobiotechnology within four years.

The programme of common activities in the network is focused on interdisciplinary research in nanomedicine for the development of innovative biochips, intelligent biomaterials, analytical methods and nanofluidic systems and techniques for drug administration, among other applications. The project also includes studies that address the ethical and economic issues and aspects of intellectual property rights related to research in this field.

The PCB will carry out strategic work on industrial cooperation in the Nano2Life project. In this regard, it will focus on the definition and implementation of the collaboration strategy with industrial partners and on the support of new spin-off projects from Nano2Life. Furthermore, the Park will promote staff mobility between the network and associated companies and will establish relations with existing industrial networks and innovation centres.
