Spanish scientific societies group to boost the role of science in the new economy

In its first elections held on 15 March, the Confederation of Spanish Scientific Societies (COSCE) elected Joan J. Guinovart, senior professor of Biochemistry at the UB and director of the IRBB-PCB, as president. The COSCE aims to make scientific education and the promotion of research "essential components" of the new economy. At present, this confederation brings together 43 scientific societies, which include around 20,000 researchers from different fields.

The COSCE aims to act as an opinion group with the objective to improve the projection of science in society and to define the measures that favour the appreciation of education as a means to “acquire the basis” by which the country can play a key role in the knowledge–based society. In addition, the COSCE intends to participate in the debate to ensure that Spain has the resources necessary for the development of quality science. In this regard, the COSCE calls for the central government and regional authorities to take on the commitments established in Lisbon and Barcelona and to increase investment in I+D, thereby bringing it closer to the proposed 3% of GDP by 2010.
