Second edition of the experiment workshops, “Research!”

On 17th and 24th November, and also on 1st and 15th December, under the title "Research!" the Barcelona Science Park (PCB) and the University of Barcelona (UB) are organizing a series of workshops that are open to the public. Those attending the sessions will have the chance to perform some of the experiments that are currently being carried out in laboratories at the PCB and UB. They will also have the opportunity to learn first hand from researchers about the different lines of research that they are involved in.

The workshops are free, and will take place at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Cultural Centre of the Caixa Catalunya located in the Pedrera building on Passeig de Gràcia (number 92). They will look into different topics ranging from investigating the author of a crime based on the analysis of different DNA samples, to how fruit flies are used to study illnesses such as cancer. They will also consider the different stages involved in researching and testing a new medicine (in which the public can participate in producing a drug to treat Parkinson’s disease) and examine the chemical reactions that take place inside the bacteria that form part of our intestinal flora.

The workshops are aimed at as broad a public as possible (from 10 years up) and are led by researchers from the Barcelona Biomedical Research Institute (IRB Barcelona), from the PCB Combinatory Chemistry Platform and from the Faculties of Psychology and Pharmacology of the University of Barcelona. The researchers will also present brief introductions to the specific work they are involved in.

“Research!” forms part of the “Research and Society” program run by the PCB and it is aimed at improving scientific literacy in society at large and at encouraging schoolchildren and young students to pursue scientific careers. Throughout the school year workshops are also held on workdays, but only for educational institutions. They are especially aimed at students in the last years of obligatory secondary education and those who have continued on to different types of further education. Participation in the workshops is limited, and it is therefore necessary to reserve a place beforehand either by telephone, on (+34) 93 403 4862, or by e-mail: comunicacio@pcb.ub.es.

Research! is supported by the Obra Social project of the Caixa Catalunya as well as by entities such as the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science, the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology and Catalunya Ràdio.
