Science Week celebrates its 20th edition with more than 350 activities

The 20th Edition of Science Week (SC'15) was inaugurated today, 16 November, at the Institute of Catalan Studies (IEC). The event, coordinated by the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (FCRi), will take place from 13 to 22 November and will host more than 300 different multidisplinary science and technology dissemination activities. SC’15 has the support of nearly 100 institutions and agencies of the Catalan system of research and innovation, most notably the University of Barcelona (UB) and the Catalan Institute for Bioengineering (IBEC) that which will be offering a unique scientific workshop at its premises located at Barcelona Science Park (PCB).

 

The  inaugural ceremony of the Science Week was chaired by the President of the Catalan Parliament, Carme Forcadell, and was attended by Lluis Jofre, Secretary of Universities and Research of the Catalan Government; Enric Banda, member of the Board of FCRi and Joandomènech Ros, President of the Institut d’Estudis Catalans (IEC). Dr. Romain Quidant, ICREA research professor at the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO), delivered the inaugural conference Nanophotonics and health: opening new perspectives for early diagnosis and treatments less invasive.
 

Science Week at UB

The Barcelona University is joining in the celebration of the 20th Science Week with multiple activities, coordinated by Josep Barbosa, Professor at the Department of Analytical Chemistry. Some of these events are a scientific video exhibition, the activity “La química i el vi” –that plans a guided tour to a cellar and a wine tasting at Poboleda (Priorat)–,  a master class on Science and Cooking at the Food and Nutrition Campus of the UB and another activities aimed at high school students. 20 years of Outreach

2015 marks 20 years of Science Week; a national and annual event that offers a programme of more than 350 activities designed to share scientific knowledge from all over Catalonia. It involves around 150 organisations from the research community, including universities, research centres, museums, associations and companies, and attracts a great deal of media attention.
 
Science Week 2015 focuses on light as this year is the International Year of Light and light-based technology. Another theme to feature is the International Year of Soils, also being marked this year.The programme is available at the FCRi’s website: www.fundaciorecerca.cat/setmanaciencia
