Presentation of “The patient’s right to end his or her life under certain circumstances:Declaration on Euthanasia”

What are the arguments in favour of euthanasia? Under what circumstances? To what extent is it accepted by the general public? What is its exact definition? Who is involved? Should the law contain provisos? Which? Should the objections of health care workers be respected?

On Wednesday 21 January at 19.30h, the Auditorium of the Parc Científic de Barcelona (PCB, Barcelona Science Park)(c/ Baldiri Reixac, 4-6) will host the presentation of , draw up by the Opinion Group of the Observatory of Bioethics and Law (OBD), part of the Universitat de Barcelona (UB, University of Barcelona) and located in the PCB.

The result of consensus between numerous specialists from a range of disciplines, the document has been coordinated by Maria Casado, jurist and director of the OBD, and by Albert Royes, secretary of the OBD and specialist in medical ethics. The presentation will be presided by the rector of the UB, Joan Tugores.

The Opinion Group put together this document in order to participate in the debate on euthanasia; a long-standing debate that is rekindled following each new case reported by the media. The document aims to establish the guidelines to clarify some of the aspects that lead to confusion and imprecision regarding terminology, and presents conclusions and possible aspects to qualify in future specific legislation.
