PCB to host the workshop entitled «Tissue Dynamics and Growth» of the European Science Foundation

On the 7th and 8th of May, the Barcelona Science Park (PCB) will be hosting a workshop on «Tissue Dynamics and Growth». The event has been organised by Javier Buceta, head of the Theoretical and In Silico Modelling of Biological Systems Group ()–that is part of the Co.S.Mo. LAB Unit (Computer Simulation & Modelling) based at PCB– and professors from the University of Barcelona, J. Casademunt and F. Sagués. This workshop has been sponsored by the European Science Foundation (ESF) –under the supervision of the FuncDyn Programme– the Physics Faculty of the University of Barcelona and the Barcelona Science Park.

«Tissue Dynamics and Growth» will illustrate how coherent collective behaviour develops from the interaction of individual units (cells). Worth pointing out is the emergence of complexity in this context relies on the crosstalk of a hierarchy of spatiotemporal scales, from molecules to cells and to tissues (and back) that ultimately determine the biological function.

In view of the above, the objective of this workshop is twofold. On the one hand, we aim at unveiling the “big picture” of these processes by combining the point of view of biologists and physicists, and on the other hand, we also aim at promoting collaborations between these groups. Thus, the workshop will not simply be a framework to present state-of-the-art research but, more importantly, a meeting point to discuss, collaborate, and learn about the state of the art on functional dynamics.

The lecturers that will be participating in the workshop are: Xavier Trepat, from the Institute of Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC), based at the PCB; Enrique Martín-Blanco, from the Institute of Molecular Biology of Barcelona (IBMB-CSIC), also based at PCB; Reza Farhadi Far, from the Max-Planck-Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems, in Dresden (Germany); Nir Gov, from the Weizmann Institute of Science, in Rehovot (Israel); François Graner, from the Curie Institute, in Paris, (France); Michael Meyer-Hermann, from the Frankfurt Institute of Advanced Studies, in Frankfurt (Germany); Jacques Prost, from the Ecole Supérieure de Physique et Chimie Industrielles, in Paris (France), and Willy Supatto, from the California Institute of Technology, in Pasadena (USA).

The Theoretical and In Silico Modelling of Biological Systems Group (The.Si.M.Bio.Sys. GROUP) is part of the Co.S.Mo. LAB Unit (Computer Simulation & Modelling) based at the Barcelona Science Park. These researchers work in the fields of Biophysics and Biology of Systems.
