Nostrum Biodiscovery wins the 2019 of Senén Vilaró Prize for best innovative company

Nostrum Biodiscovery (NBD), located at the Barcelona Science Park, has won the "2019 Senén Vilaró Prize for best innovative company", one of the four awards conferred by the Board of Trustees of the University of Barcelona (UB) and the Bosch i Gimpera Foundation (FBG). The ceremony for the awards was held yesterday at the Aula Magna of the Historical Building of the UB.

Nostrum Biodiscovery (NBD) was awarded the Senén Vilaró Prize to the top innovative company thanks to its innovative technology to speed up the design of new drugs. Combining its own technologies with the best modelling software on the market, the company provides in silico services to pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies to accelerate and optimise the design of therapeutic molecules and enzymes, and overcome the common “bottlenecks” in the most initial stages of drug discovery.

The company’s competitive benefit is based on computational technologies -carried out by Modesto Orozco, professor at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biomedicine of the UB and group leader in the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona), and Víctor Guallar, ICREA research professor at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC-CNS). Both are founding partners of Nostrum Biodiscovery together with Robert Soliva, Doctor in Computational Chemistry, with more than a decade of experience in the pharmaceutical industry.

The launch of company in 2016 was also possible thanks to the strategic participation of the Bosch i Gimpera Foundation (FBG) of the University of Barcelona (UB), Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies (ICREA), and the Botín Foundation, as a catalyst for technology transfer through its Mind the Gap acceleration programme.

The rector of the University of Barcelona, Joan Elias, the acting president of the Board of Trustees, Joan Corominas, and the director of Bosch i Gimpera Foundation, Carme Verdager, awarded the prizes to this year’s awardees yesterday at the Aula Magna of the Historical Building of the UB.
