Marco Milán and Lluís Ribas, candidate researchers for the EURYI Awards Programme

The ICREA researchers of the at the Parc Científic de Barcelona (PCB, Barcelona Science Park), Marco Milán and Lluís Ribas, are among the for the . Of these candidates, 8 work in Catalonia, 2 of whom are at the Universitat de Barcelona (Guifré Vidal Bonafont and Jaume Gomis) and 2 at the PCB.

Organized by the research organizations of 14 European countries, the EURYI Programme awards between 750,000 and 1,250,000 € over 5 years and for a total of 25 young investigators. Candidates of any nationality who wish to establish their research team in Europe and in any field are considered.

Marco Milán, which he joined as an ICREA-PCB researcher in September 2003, is the head of the Developmental Biology of Drosophila Group at the IRBB-PCB. Graduated in Biology from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Milán obtained his Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. He did his post-doc research at the Molecular Biology Centre of Madrid and at the European Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Heidelberg. At the IRBB-PCB, Milán develops research on the mechanisms through which the cells of pluricellular organisms are organized into distinct tissues and organs. The groups aims to identify new genes involved in the wing growth of Drosophila and in the generation of the dorsal-ventral affinity boundary, using genetic and proteomic techniques.

Lluís Ribas de Pouplana, head of the Genetic Translation Group at the IRBB-PCB, graduated in Biology from the Universitat de Barcelona and obtained his Ph.D. from Edinburgh University. He did his post-doc research at the Institute of Technology (MIT) and at the Scripps Research Institute of San Diego as professor of Molecular Biology.

In June 2003, he returned to Catalonia as an ICREA investigator to join the IRBB-PCB. Among other distinctions, he has held a La Caixa/Fullbright award and has been the beneficiary of the European Union Marie Curie Reintegration Programme. In addition, he coordinates a network of European researchers with the aim to identify new therapies against infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, malaria or trypanosomiasis.

At present, Ribas focuses his research on the study of the mechanisms of the genetic code and their potential biomedical applications. On the one hand, he and his team aim to elucidate aspects on the origin of life through the analysis of this universal biological process while, on the other, this basic research is complemented by studies on new methods to improve the selection process of antibiotics.

The EURYI Programme is an initiative of the association that groups the main research organizations in the European Union, EUROHORCSs, in collaboration with the European Science Foundation (ESF). This programme aims to contribute to building the European Research Area (ERA) through the development of European science and the training of a new generation of leading investigators. The main selection criteria of candidates for the EURYI Programme are scientific quality, originality, and potential to become world leaders in the respective research fields. The final selection of candidates will be made in accordance with the regulations of the participant organizations.
