Contemporary Science Fair, a new means to inform the general public about the scientific method

On 6 and 7 May, at the head offices of the Institut d'Estudis Catalans (IES, Institute of Catalan Studies)(c/ Carme, 47), the "Contemporary Science Fair 2004" (Fair VCC04) will be held. This event has been organized by the Parc Científic de Barcelona (PCB, Barcelona Science Park) and the Catalan Society of Biology, with the support of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the IES. The VCC'04 Fair aims to contribute to improving society's appreciation of science by informing the general public about research currently underway in Barcelona

In its first year this fair received more than 2,000 visitors, which highlights public interest in science, and the need for new scientific communication channels to increase social awareness of modern research. Specifically, the fair aims to inform the public, directly through researchers, about the characteristics of the scientific method, and thereby show the scientific knowledge that corresponds to controversial stages in which it is still being consolidated and has not been agreed on by the scientific community.

The fair, therefore, allows the citizens of Barcelona to observe the scientific method before its consolidation. Visitors have access to the equipment used for important research projects and have the opportunity talk to researchers. In addition, the 2004 Fair intends to show the research being developed in Barcelona in a coordinated manner, by exhibiting 12 projects from several centres and R+D institutes. These projects cover topics as diverse as research in Antarctica, nanobioengineering, structural biology, photonic sciences, archaeology in Nicaragua, and studies related to water, neurodegenerative diseases, industrial waste, epidemiology or genetic diversity.

The Fair, which is directed to the general public, is free of charge and will be open from 10 to 14h and from 16h to 20 h. For more information go to www.pcb.ub.es/vcc
