Binding agreement signed for the construction of the new health campus of the Hospital Clínic

The binding agreement between the Government of Catalonia, the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, the University of Barcelona, the city councils of Barcelona, L’Hospitalet de Llobregat and Esplugues de Llobregat, and the Diputació de Barcelona, for the construction of the new health campus of the Hospital Clínic at the UB sports facilities, was signed today at the Palau de la Generalitat. The project will reinforce the leading role of the UB in biomedical research, especially due to its connection with a reference space such as the Park, the expansion of which, planned in the MIES-UB project, will contribute to strengthening the Health bloc that is being developed in the south area of Diagonal Campus.

This agreement establishes a joint collaboration framework between all the institutions to promote urban development for the construction of the new campus in the UB’ sports services. The extension of the Hospital Clínic and the relocation of the UB’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences are intended to increase the potential of the UB, such as the enhancement of its health, university, scientific and technological excellence. It is also committed to sustainability from an environmental, economic and social point of view.

The Hospital Clínic de Barcelona is a leading hospital facility, with a clinical capacity of the highest level and high technology. It has a strong vocation for university teaching and scientific research. It is one of the most important healthcare complexes in the country and in Europe.

This new campus, which responds to the needs of growth, service improvement and excellence, will include the extension of the hospital, the UB’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and other agreed healthcare, university, scientific and research facilities.

The participating local administrations, together with the Government of Catalonia, will promote urban planning measures and will plan public and private transport and the required accessibility.

The future construction of the new facilities will make it possible to maintain the hospital’s facilities at the Villarroel, Plató and Maternitat sites to meet the needs of the reference population. The hospital’s current location in the Eixample neighbourhood will include healthcare, teaching, research and innovation services, which will be maintained, as well as new municipal facilities and public space.

The rector of the University of Barcelona, Joan Guàrdia, also highlighted the importance of the agreement: “Undoubtedly, this is the most important strategic healthcare, teaching and research project for the future of our country. And it is so because one of the leading hospitals in Spain, the Hospital Clínic, and the best university in Spain, the University of Barcelona, whose Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is ranked among the top fifty in Europe, are sealing and strengthening their historic alliance to promote one of the most powerful health campuses in the south of the continent”.

Defining the future of the Hospital Clínic

In February 2021, the Government of Catalonia, through the Department of Health, Barcelona City Council and Barcelona Provincial Council signed an initial protocol to study possible sites for the future new complex.

The architectural/urban coordination and health coordination commissions that took part issued a report at the end of the same year, proposing the space currently occupied by the UB’s sports courts as a new location for this project.

In May 2022, a new protocol was signed, extending the collaboration between the UB and the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona Consortium, to evaluate this proposal. As a result of the application of this collaboration instrument, in February 2023 all the participating institutions reached an agreement establishing the suitability and viability of this site for the purposes of locating the healthcare, teaching, research and innovation activities of the future Hospital Clínic de Barcelona.
