PCB presents the BATX2LAB awards

Yesterday, Wednesday 9th March, the Barcelona Science Park organized the awards ceremony of the best research works of the BATX2LAB program –a project fostered as part of its program 'Research in Society'–, which this year has been organized with the support of the Municipal Institute of Education of the Barcelona City Council (IMEB). The event took place at the Dolors Aleu Hall at PCB bringing together more than 100 attendees.

 

The event was attended by Adela  Farré, director of Communication, Marketing and Promotion at PCB; Sara Sherwood, Head of Communications and External Relations of the Institute for Biomedical Research in Barcelona (IRB Barcelona); Josep M. Fernández, Biology professor at the University of Barcelona  (UB) and collaborator of the Batx2Lab project; and Miriam Martínez, coordinator of  PCB´s  Research in Society program, accompanied by participating students and tutors competing in this edition. This year, 39 students  out of the 90 applications received were selected.

Over the course of the event, the attendees had the oppoortunity to enjoy the scientific monolog “Terrestrial Migrains” by physic and scientific writer, Daniel Garcia, member of the ‘Big Van: Scientist on Wheels‘, who made the night with his sense of humor and knowledge of science, by interaction with the audience.

BATX2LAB is part of the “Research in Society” outreach and science dissemination  program of Parc Cientific de Barcelona. The initiative offers eleventh graders the possibility of carrying out the practical part of their research in different laboratories located at the PCB and tutored by a researcher who supports and guides students throughout the development process. 

The BATX2LAB program concludes each year with the presentation of the awards to the winning best works which will also be present at a stand at the ‘Live Research’ fair promoted by PCB (Click here to see the video on YouTube).This year the fair will be held at Cosmocaixa Barcelona from 6 to 9 April, where students will have the chance to explain all visitors the research projects they carried out.

The winners for 2015-2016 were:

–Ariadna Colomer Morante for her work ‘Study of caffeine toxicity in daphnia and cells’ from the Alexandre Satorras secondary school. Center´s tutor: Margarita Soriano. PCB´s tutor: David Ramos, researcher at the Toxicology Unit  (UTOX-PCB).
– Arnau Bueno Tricas for his work “Generation of prosthesis from organic skin” from the de la Escuela Virgen María de Núria secondary school. Center´s tutor: Albert Pesquero. PCB´s tutor: Albert Garcia Castaño, researcher at the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia  (IBEC).

 

Crazy About Biomedicine

At the same event, the award to best research work carried out under the ‘Crazy About Biomedicine‘ was also given.The prize to the best research work carried out under the , organised by IRB Barcelona with the collaboration of Fundación Cataluña–La Pedrera and the support of the PCB.

The winning student was Miriam Condeminas for her work “Analysis of epithelial tumors in Drosophila melanogaster wing imaginarydiscs” from the Immaculada Concepció secondary school. Center´s tutor: Teresa Contreras. IRB Barcelona tutor: Mariana Muzzopapa.

‘Crazy About Biomedicine’ is a one year long course aimed at freshmen secondary school student wishing to participate in some fascinating projects that are currently being done in the field of life sciences. During last year, from January to December 2015, 17 girls and 7 boys had the opportunity to delve into the theory and scientific techniques in biomedicine, working hand in hand with 12 doctoral researchers of various nationalities at IRB´s laboratory facilities.
