IBEC is awarded 13.8 million euros by the Generalitat de Catalunya to perform research activities

The Regional Government of Catalonia (Generalitat de Catalunya) has earmarked 13.8 million euros for the Bioengineering Institute of Catalonia () in order to develop research programmes in the field of applied engineering and biomedicine, such as the transfer of results from these activities to the business and health care sectors. This funding will be given through a collaboration agreement between the Regional Government of Catalonia and the Foundation that manages the institute.

Set up at the end of last year by the Universitat de Barcelona (UB), the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) and the Regional Government of Catalonia, IBEC seeks to further the development of multidisciplinary research of excellence. In addition, it promotes teaching activities in biomedical engineering and acts as an international reference in this field.

With its headquarters in the Parc Científic de Barcelona (PCB, Barcelona Science Park), IBEC hosts around 50 researchers and technicians associated mainly with the UB, UPC and other programmes for the incorporation of researchers. This multidisciplinary centre, which includes the Nanobioengineering Research Laboratory, focuses its activity on six research programmes related to cellular biotechnology; nanobioengineering, cellular biomechanics and biophysics; biomaterials, implantations and tissue engineering; signals and medical instrumentation; and robotics and biomedical imaging.

Its location in the PCB allows IBEC to develop its activities in a highly stimulating research environment in life sciences, thereby fostering the establishment of collaboration agreements between the organizations there in order to apply nanotechnologies to this field. IBEC also has access to the powerful technological facilities of the PCB, including the , which provides services in nanometric fabrication, manipulation and analysis.
