The Parc Científic de Barcelona takes part in the 18th Science Week

Within the framework of the 18th Science Week- that this year will take place from the 15th to the 2th of November- the Parc Científic de Barcelona (PCB) in a participatory fashion: the «» workshops at La Pedrera, aimed at the general public; the conferences «» aimed at secondary school students and two ‘threatre workshops' organized for the younger primary school students as part of the «». All activities are supported by Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT), of Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, Barcelona Culture Institute of the Barcelona City Council and the Catalunya-La Pedrera Foundation

«PhD Express!»

In these conferences, which will take place at the Parc Científic de Barcelona on 19 and 21 November at 10:00 h and 15:00 h, secondary school students will be invited to reconstruct the various stages that a researcher has to go through to develop their doctoral thesis project. This year, and under the title ‘How do we identify genetic mutations involved in cancer?’, the theme of the research work will focus on the analysis of the behavioral differences between malignant and benign tumor cells from the point of view of gene activity. The aim is to give students the possibility to do, in just over two hours, a kind of ‘PhD Express’ as a set of clues that will take them through several labs at IRB Barcelona, del Centro Nacional de Análisis Genómico (CNAG) and PCB Core Scientific Services (SCC-PCB) of the PCB.

«Do Research!»

On Saturday 16 and 23 of November, from 11.00 to 13.00, researchers from IRB Barcelona, the Molecular Biology Institute of Barcelona (IBMB-CSIC) and the University of Barcelona, will move their laboratories to La Pedrera in order to encourage interaction with citizens and give them the opportunity to participate in some of their experiments. This year there will be two workshops: ‘!Analyze DNA and investigate the author of a crime!’, during which the attendees will be able to extract their own DNA and analyze samples from five suspects in a crime to discover the author, and ‘Looking for a target for the treatment of atherosclerosis’, where participants will be able to perform a genetically engineered bacterial transformation.

«Research in Primary School in Biomedicine»

This activity, aimed at the primary school community, young primary school students will be given the chance to learn first-hand, through direct experimentation with the scientific method, how research is carried out in the field of biomedicine, as well as the new instruments and techniques that are normally used in research labs. The sessions will take place on Friday, 15 and 22 of November, at the Parc Científic de Barcelona, from 10.00 to 12.30, and will consist of two parts: in the first part, a theatrical workshop will be staged where two ‘crazy scientists’ will invite students to perform experiments and will familiarize them with basic concepts such as cells, DNA and genes; in the second part, participants will visit several laboratories at PCB accompanied by a scientist to get to know the day to day reality of biomedical research.
