The exhibition “Embryos and Medicine in the XXI Century. What do you think?” is opened at the Sant Pau Hospital

On Wednesday 6 October of 2004 the exhibition "Embryos and Medicine in the XXI Century. What do you think?" will be opened in the entrance hall of the Santa Creu i Sant Pau Hospital. The exhibition has been organized by Barcelona City Councillor for Women's Affairs and Civil Rights together with the San Pau Hospital. Developed by the PCB and the Observatory for Bioethics and Law, the exhibition is free of charge and is open to the public from Monday to Sunday, 10 am to 8.00 pm, until 6 December.

The opening ceremony will be held at 12.00 am and will be attended by the Deputy Mayor of the Barcelona City Council, Jordi Portabella, the Councillor for Women’s Affairs and Civil Rights, Pilar Vallugera, the director of the Santa Creu i Sant Pau Hospital, Jordi Colomer, and the sub- director of the PCB, Josep Samitier. The commissioner of the exhibition, Rosina Malagrida, will also give a guided visit around the exhibition.

This initiative arose with the obejctive to provide information and promote public participation in an informed social debate on the use of embryos as a source of stem cells. In this regard, it covers the ethical and scientific issues of this proposal, and also reflects the opinions held by diverse sectors of society. In addition, the exhibition informs the non-specialized general public about the current state of research, the latest breakthroughs and therapies that could be developed by using stem cells.

Through a range of interactive tools and virtual discusión forums, the exhibition monitors the opinions expressed by visitors, which are periodically shown on the exhibition web site ( ).

Furthermore, to stimulate public debate in schools, invitations for guided viists for school parties have also been sent to 800 centres in Barcelona (Cicle Superior d’Educació Primària, Ensenyament Secundari Obligatori i Batxillerat).

“Embryos and Medicine in the XXI Century. What do you think?” was first opened on 16 January, 2003, in the “Edifici Històric” at the University of Barcelona, where, during a month and a half it received 2,700 visitors. It was later moved to the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Valencia on the occasion of the Science Week 2003.
