The Barcelona Science Park launches the 15th edition of BATX2LAB

The Barcelona Science Park has just opened the registration for the 15th edition of BATX2LAB, which offers High School students the chance to carry out the practical part of their research project in the PCB laboratories under the tutorship of a scientist. This initiative is part of PCB’s Research in Society programme –a proposal to bring science to citizens and promote research careers in young student– that offers over 100 activities in which around 5,000 people participate every year.

The Barcelona Science Park has kicked off its BATX2LAB programme with the traditional informative session, which was held today in the Sala Dolors Aleu and attended by more of sixty teachers and heads of study from schools from all around over Catalonia. Mercè Gomez, head of Outreach at PCB and Josep Maria Fernández, coordinator of tutors and researchers participating in the program, have explained how the programme will function and the scientific fields of the researchers who will act as tutors in this edition.

The BATX2LAB programme offers High School students the chance to carry out the practical part of their research project in the PCB laboratories under the tutorship of a scientist, with the 3 best projects receiving an award at the end. In addition, the winning parties successful candidates will present their work at a stand at the Live Research Fair—held every year at CosmoCaixa Barcelona—together with 11 research groups from prestigious institutions from across Catalonia, in which they will explain their project to the attending public.

BATX2LAB is part of PCB’s Research in Society initiative, a proposal to promote dialogue between citizens and researchers, and to encourage young people to consider jobs in the field,  which has been one of its strategic approaches since 2003. The programme is supported by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (Fundación Española para la Ciencia y la TecnologíaFECYT) and the Barcelona City Council. In 2016, Bat2Lab was recognised with the Educational Quality Label by the Pedagogical Council of Barcelona and in 2018 it was recognized with the Barcelona Education Innovation Award in the High School category, in the first edition of these prizes created by Barcelona City Council to offer recognition to altruistic initiatives for educational innovation and change carried out by schools and organisations in the city to strengthen training opportunities and social inclusion.

►  The application window is open until deadline is 17 May, and the successful applicants will be published on the programme’s website:  www.pcb.ub.edu/recercaensocietat
