The Barcelona Science Park in the 17th Science Week

As part of the , hosted this year in Catalonia from 16 to 25 November, the Barcelona Science Park (PCB) is organizing two outreach scientific activities: and a series of scientific experiment workshops '' at La Pedrera. Both initiatives are supported by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) of the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness; the Institute of Culture of Barcelona City Council; the Agency for the management of University and Research Grants (AGAUR) of the Generalitat of Catalonia; and the CatalunyaCaixa Foundation.

The open days at the Barcelona Science Park will be held on 20 and 22 November, in two sessions at 10 am and 15h.00 hours. Under the title “What is the Barcelona Science Park? What is research? “, this activity invites participants to understand the different laboratories and services where doctoral students develop a research project. In each of these areas, participants submit a sample and come out with the corresponding result, reconstructing in this way, the steps that the scientist has to carry out to do his or her project. The goal is for all participants to do a sort of ‘express doctorate” in a couple of hours.

The topic of the project presented during these open days is “How are genetic mutations involved in cancer identified?” and focuses on the analysis of the differences in the behavior of malignant and benign tumor cells from the point of view their genetic activity. This is an adapted version for the public of various research projects, presented this year by Francisco Barriga, researcher at the Colorectal Cancer Laboratory led by Eduard Batlle of the IRB. The activity features the collaboration of researchers from the Advanced Digital Microscopy Core Platform at IRB Barcelona and the National Center for Genome Analysis (CNAG), based at the Barcelona Science Park.

«Do Research!», a series of experimental workshops In Do Research! 2012, researchers at IRB Barcelona and the University of Barcelona will move for the 7th consecutive year, part of their laboratory facilities to La Pedrera in order to encourage interaction with the public and give people the opportunity to participate in some of the experiments they are conducting with the same tools and materials with which they do their work regularly. In this year´s edition, there are four different proposals that allow the public to get familiar with the steps that follow the process of developing a new drug; how to analyse several DNA samples to find out who was the author of a crime; get a closer insight into genetic engineering techniques, and develop a new drug to treat Alzheimer’s. The activity is free and will take place the last three Saturdays of November and first Saturday of December from 11:00 to 13:00 hours at La Pedrera. The same workshops will also be available during the week for the educational community at the OpenLab at the PCB.
