The Barcelona Science Park chooses three winners and one runner-up at 25th Exporecerca Jove

From 6 to 9 March, the URL-La Salle hosted the 25th Exporecerca Jove, where secondary and upper secondary students from all over the world presented their research projects in self-designed spaces. This research showcase, organised annually by the MAGMA association, mainly promotes research among young people and encourages the exchange of experiences. Over the last 25 years, 4,800 participants from 25 countries have taken part in the exhibition, presenting 2,400 works, of which 700 have received awards.

The panel from the Barcelona Science Park awarded three prizes to the following young women:  Anna Serrano, Elsa Díaz Moreno and Oyana Ndong Michá, from El Cairat school, for their work, “Study of the toxicity and effectiveness of the light-activated molecule MRS7145-3 for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. Comparison with the MRS7145 molecule”; Noa Manuel Garcia, from Martí Dot school, for her work, “Effects of current mutagenic agents on DNA”; Paula Flores Soria and Ariadna Hermoso Moreno, from Mare de Déu de la Salut school in Sabadell, for their work, “Review and comparison of the sensorimotor function of different treatments for spinal cord injuries in humans and murids”. Finally, the prize for the runner-up went to Sara Muñoz Masdeu, from Monlau school, for her work, “Reducing capacity and antioxidant concentration of orange peel residue according to country of origin, ripening stage and variety”.

The prizes awarded by the PCB, which has collaborated since the event’s beginnings, include a guided tour of the PCB facilities and participation in RESSÓ-Recerca en Societat programme experiment workshops. The RESSÓ programme is committed to promoting scientific careers among young people in an effort to ensure quality education as part of its Sustainability Plan and is backed by FECYT, the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology of the Ministry of Science and Innovation and Barcelona City Council.

From the stands at Exporecerca Jove, which are open to the public, the participants, students between 12 and 19 years of age, present the results of their research through posters, graphics and multimedia, assemblies, models, instruments, etc. The exhibition is promoted and organised by MAGMA, Associació per a Promoure la Recerca Jove, a Catalan non-profit youth organisation based in Barcelona, and is part of MILSET, an international federation that promotes research among young people.

Year after year, MAGMA’s Exporecerca Jove initiative has proved successful. An accredited panel of judges from various academic and professional fields evaluates the projects presented and on the last day awards the prizes, which basically consist of their authors’ participation in other international events.

Over 25 years, Exporecerca Jove has drawn more than 95,000 visitors and has encouraged 4,800 participants from 25 different countries to present more than 2,400 research projects. More than 700 prizes have been awarded, after evaluation by a panel that has had over 1,500 members in total. This is all thanks to the involvement of the more than 400 people in the organisation dedicated to putting together over 70 days of exhibitions in the event’s 25-year history.
