Roka Furadada joins Hospital del Mar’s programme to humanise ICU

The startup Roka Furadada, which develops and produces a new generation of smart solar ingredients that adapt to the level of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, has donated a first batch of sun protection creams to the Hospital del Mar in Barcelona for the intensive care unit (ICU) patients taking part in the therapeutic seaside outings. The deeptech company, which has a laboratory in the Barcelona Science Park, thus continues the solidarity collaboration with the center which started in September last year.

The therapeutic seaside outings is part of the Hospital del Mar’s programme to humanise ICU, which also includes music therapy, accompaniment with therapeutic animals or the use of virtual reality in the rehabilitation of hospitalized people. By participating in this project, Roka Furadada is taking one step its social commitment to which it already contributes by developing ingredients for the circular economy that reduce the impact on humans and ecosystems.

Donating these SPF30 sunscreens will offer skin protection those patients, helping them to enjoy the sun in a safe way by preventing skin diseases caused by solar radiation, thanks to the company’s patented ROKA Smart UV® technology.

The delivery of the batch was atended by Judit Camargo, CEO of Roka Furadada; Judit Bigas, scientific project manager of the company; Dr. Joan Ramon Masclans MD, leader of the Intensive Medicine Service of the Hospital del Mar; and Desirée Ruiz, manager of the ICU’s Nurse Service. They highlighted the importance of this kind of projects.

According to Dr. Masclans: The collaboration between industry and several foundations to jointly develop our ICU humanisation programme is key. We could not have reached this milestone without it. We are very grateful to Roka Furadada for joining in the effort from the start.”

On this subject, Judit Camargo has highlighted that “it is really moving to be a part of this therapeutic outing and to contribute to such an important, humane project. The job that they do in ICUs is incredible, not only saving lives, but also taking care of and being there for the patients.”

Roka Furadada’s formulas incorporate the main ingredient in the firm’s catalogue, ROKA Smart UV® PvB 360. Unlike ordinary UV filters, this ingredient activates when it receives sunlight, increasing the protection at the UVA range and extending it over time.and protecting when it is most needed. KA Smart UV® PvB 360 was launched in 2022 at Cosmetorium, the most important cosmetic ingredients tradeshow in Spain, and it is currently sold all over the world.
