New exhibition in Manresa on the ethologist Jordi Sabater Pi

The exhibition "Jordi Sabater Pi. Profile of a naturalist" includes drawings by the ethologist Jordi Sabater Pi of human faces, exotic and more familiar landscapes, sleeping and moving animals, single animals or animals in groups. The exhibition, which is open until 27 June in the Exhibition may of the Caixa Manresa (Plana de l'Om, number 5, Manresa), brings together a series of sketches and drawings that reflect a life devoted to the study of the natural environment and of humans in an area of Africa.

The exhibition shows the ethological trajectory of Jordi Sabater Pi, a pioneering scientist in the study of primates in their natural habitat, who recorded the observations of his scientific research through drawings. According the exhibition organizer, the scientific journalist Xavier Duran, “the numerous drawings made by Sabater Pi are testimonies of an extensive and active scientific trajectory and show his extraordinary curiosity and sensitivity. These drawings help transmit not only knowledge but also feelings”. The exhibition is open on weekdays from 18 to 21 h. and at weekends from 12 to 14 h. and from 18 to 21 h.

Born in 1922, Jordi Sabater Pi began to self-study ethology and anthropology during his visit to Equatorial Guinea between 1940 and 1969, where he started field research. On returning to Barcelona, he studied Psychology and in 1977 became a professor at the UB, where he was a pioneer in ethology in Spain. Emeritus professor of the UB since 1987, Jordi Sabater Pi is also a “Doctor Honoris Causa” from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (Autonomous University of Barcelona) and the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Autonomous University of Madrid) and has been awarded, among other prizes, the Catalan Research Foundation Prize (1991) and the Medalla d’Or (Gold Medal) awarded by the city council of Barcelona for scientific merit (1996).

The Parc Científic de Barcelona hosts the Sabater Pi Collection, a documentation centre located in the Humanities Library at the UB. This collection is composed of books and journals on topics related to ethology, as well as a collection of drawings and paintings of naturalistic subjects, most of which were done by Sabater Pi himself. Of great interest to scientists, academics in anthropology, ethology, history and the general public alike, the collection also includes a professional epistolary and a series of objects from Africa, which show the culture and lifestyle of the people, and the animals of that continent.
