IRB Barcelona to participate in #GivingTuesday

On Tuesday 1 December, the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona) will be participating in #GivingTuesday, a global movement founded four years ago in New York that seeks to promote fundraising and that has reached Spain this year. #GivingTuesday Spain operates under the leadership of a group of 19 non profit organizations that want to expand philanthropy and volunteering and build a better society, with the aim of encouraging people, charities and businesses to donate time, money or their voice to help a good cause. The movement is open to organizations, foundations, companies, students, universities and schools, as well as to individuals looking to launch or collaborate on more than 60 projects registered on its website.

IRB Barcelona is participating in this initiative in order to share and inform the public about its mission, namely to conduct innovative research to improve people’s quality of life. The 23 laboratories of the centre work towards advancing research into the molecular bases of cancer and metastasis, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, and many other disorders—some of which are rare diseases. The breakthroughs made by the centre will contribute to designing the medicine of the future.

In 2012 IRB Barcelona launched an innovative YouTube video, featuring its scientists as dancers. Departing from formats more traditional to research institutes, the is a key element in a viral fundraising campaign aimed at raising awareness and support for IRB Barcelona and its activities as a world-class research centre devoted to understanding fundamental questions about human health and disease. The video is accompanied by a three-pronged fundraising campaign that aims to help ensure that the video goes viral. For each viewing of the video on YouTube, IRB will receive a donation.

What is #GivingTuesday?

#GivingTuesday was launched by New York’s 92nd Street Y (92Y) in 2012 –as an alternative to Black Friday and Cyber Monday– along with founding partner the United Nations Foundation. The movement’s goal is to establish a global day dedicated to giving to social causes, whether in terms of food, money, time (volunteering), second-hand items,  and attracted 2,500 partners in its first year. In 2014  #GivingTuesday brought together 30,000 partners in 68 countries around the world — including international and local nonprofits as well as civic-minded small businesses and multi-national corporations.

#GivingTuesday Spain promotes volunteerism and donation online from their website and social networks, providing a platform for nonprofits to solicit donations of time, resources, and talents: http://givingtuesday.es/projects/
