Institutional act for the twentieth anniversary of the Barcelona Science Park

The auditorium Antoni Caparrós in the Barcelona Science Park (PCB) will hold this Friday, December 21, the institutional act to complete the activity program to commemorate its twentieth anniversary. More than a hundred important people from the academic, scientific, business and government areas are expected to attend the act.

The activity, to be presided by the rector of the University of Barcelona (UB), Joan Elias, will be chaired by the director-general of PCB, Maria Terrades. Distinguished members of the PCB community will take part in the activity: Meritxell Teixido, adjunct researcher of the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona), as the spokesperson of the scientific collective; Josep Samitier, director of the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC), representing public entities; Joan Feixas, director of Enantia –a UB spin-off and one of the first companies located in the Park- as representative of a successful case of entrepreneur initiatives, and Carlos R. Plata Salamán, CSO, CMO and Head of R&D of Esteve, who will treat the paradigm of an international big pharma located in PCB.

In this act, the PCB will pay homage to all those people and institution that helped in the success of this ambitious project –pioneer in Spain- launched by the University of Barcelona in 1997, with the aim of promoting research of excellence, knowledge transfer and entrepreneurship.

Twenty years after laying the first stone, the Barcelona Science Park is one of the reference models in Europe regarding scientific, and business innovation. With a 100,000 square meters surface area and a community of 2,700 professionals –54 % of them being women– the PCB has become a pole of attraction for talent, where more than a hundred public and private entities interact in a privileged environment, creating synergies that reinforce collaborations and exchange of knowledge for the creation of a new business tissue.

The event has been made possible thanks to the sponsorship of Enantia, Esteve, the Ordesa Group, the Molecular Biology Institute of Barcelona (IBMB – CSIC) and Qiagen; with the support of Bellavista, the Scientific and Technological Centres of the Universitat de Barcelona (CCITUB), the Biotechnology Business Institute Barcelona (IEB), Ferrer, Iproteos and ProteoDesign, and the collaboration of Estrella Damm, Ferrovial Servicios and Suez.
