Handing over of the 3rd edition “Professor Jordi Sabater Pi” Awards

The handinng over of the "Professor Jordi Sabater Pi" Awards aimed at secondary students and organised by the UAB Chair "The social brain", the Barcelona Consortium of Education, and the Barcelona Zoo, was held yesterday at the "Saló de Cent" hall of the Barcelona City Council.

The objective of these awards is to promote the study of human social behaviour from an evolution perspective, to awaken interest in biology and to unvail scientific vocations among the students as well as to encourage the use of new technologies at school, as the results from this reflection must be compiled in an audiovisual document.

The winners of this third edition were: Sant Josep de Calassanç Secondary School, first prize winner; Josep Comas i Solà Secondary School, second prize winner; and Barri Besós Secondary School, third prize winner.

The third edition of the Jordi Sabater Pi Awards was organised in the collaboration with the Barcelona Science Park and the Jordi Sabater Pi Collection that is also based at PCB and constitutes the documentary fund of the scientific and graphic work conducted by this prestigious ethologist. Hence, the PCB participates in the presentation of the special award given to “the best naturalist drawing of a primate”, that Jordi Sabater will personally award to the winner. The winner of this 3rd edition was Jorge Lazo, a student from the Sant Josep de Calassanç Secondary School. The finalists were Anabel Martínez, from the Joan D’Austria Secondary School; and, Ghaima Guedari, from the Fort Pius Secondary School.

More than 200 students from 14 different secondary schools in Barcelona participated in the event. The award presentation was presided by the Education town councilor from the Barcelona City Council, Montserrat Ballarín; the director of the UAB Chair “The Social Brain”, Òscar Vilarroya; the managing director of the Barcelona Consortium of Education, Manel Blasco; the director of the Barcelona Zoo, and Jordi Sabater Pi himself, emerit professor at the University of Barcelona.

The UAB Chair «The Social Brain» aims to gain further insight into an emerging scientific discipline known as social neuroscience, the objective of which is to bring to light new ways of understanding the social dimension of the human being. Besides bringing the world of primatetology and biology closer to the students, the award is also intended to make students give some thought to contemporary society on subjects such as learning, leadership, distribution of the territory and the resolution of conflicts.
