A report in which the AQR-IREA has collaborated indicates that the creation of companies is growing in Catalonia

Catalonia is the first autonomous community to launch a pioneer instrument, the IDEM (Business Demography Indicators), which has a three month periodicity and aims to analyse business structure and demography. The approach and methodology of this new tool has been developed through collaboration between the Department of Labor and the UB's Regional Quantitative Analysis research group of the Institute of Research in Applied Economics (AQR-IREA), an entity affiliated with the Barcelona Science Park. According to data from the , the net creation of companies in Catalonia has grown by 0.4% in this second trimester for the first time in three years; specifically 25,029 companies have been created and 22,397 have been closed down. The report also reveals that of the 619,678 companies that are presently in Catalonia, 94% are microcompanies.

This initiative is framed with the Inicia Plan for the creation of companies that the Department of Labor set in motion in the second trimester of 2008 with the objective of promoting the creation of more and better companies. Inicia comprehensively encompasses support to entrepreneurial activity in all phases of company creation, spanning from awareness in early stages to business consolidation.

This programme is solidified throughout the entire territory in the Inicia Network, which has the support of 176 entities and 600 technicians. Of these entities that provide coverage all over the region, 127 are public –city council economic promotion services, regional boards, etc.,- and 49 are entities specialised in the creation of companies.

In 2010 the Department is expecting to train and advise over 54,000 entrepreneurs and is also hoping to promote the creation of 6,225 microcompanies (0 to 9 employees) that will allow for the creation of 8,625 jobs.
