Debating the Relationship between Science and Politics at the Barcelona Science Park

What role should science play in political decision-making? Who decides whether somebody has the expertise to advise government? To what extent should experts influence regulation in areas calling for scientific knowledge, such as pipelining water, installing high-tension power lines, setting limits on CO2 emissions or approving genetically modified food for consumption? All these questions are to be addressed on Thursday, 12 June, at the Barcelona Science Park (Fèlix Serratosa Conference Room, c/Baldiri Reixac, 10). The debate, entitled "The Role of Science in Political Decision-making", will kick off at 6 pm.

Participating in the event will be Joan Comella, Director General of the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (FCRI); Jaume Padrós, Secretary of the Barcelona Medical Association; Melanie Smallman, Managing Director of ; and Rosina Malagrida, Director of Communications at the Barcelona Science Park, who will serve as moderator. Think-Lab provides an integrated communications service based in the UK, developing innovative communication channels and campaigns to influence the public’s perception of science. Its clients include the Wellcome Trust and the Royal Society.

The evening will bring to a close the third annual series of scientific debates held under the banner “Science in Debate” (, ), sponsored by the Barcelona Science Park. Admission to all debates is free of charge and the discussions are aimed at a scientifically-minded audience, including students in the life sciences, researchers and anyone who may have an interest in science and its ethical, legal and social implications. The purpose of the debates is to offer a point of encounter in which opinions can be exchanged and diverse viewpoints put forward.

As in previous years, posing questions and participating in the debate will be supplemented by use of an electronic voting system to enable attendees to register their opinions on the topics raised. At the close of the event, those attending will have the opportunity to carry on conversing with the speakers in a more informal setting, in which light refreshments will be served.
