The PCB participates in the 4th Science Festival of the Universitat de Barcelona

The Barcelona Science Park (PCB) has collaborated once again in the 4th Annual Science Festival of the Universitat de Barcelona, which took place on Friday 11 May in the Edifici Històric of the Universitat de Barcelona (UB). The aim of this day is to bring the public closer to the research carried out by the Grup UB in a fun and innovative way.

The Barcelona Science Park has participated in the Festival with the ‘Flies in the Laboratory’ activity, which is part of the Discover Research workshop, one of the projects of the Research in Society programme launched in 2003 by the PCB to bring live science to all audiences and encourage young people to consider employment in this line of work.

Delivered by the researchers Ana Elena Gaspar and Victoria Beatriz Pino, this workshop showed the life cycle of flies, as well as their advantages and use in research. Experiments were also conducted with the mutations that could be observed. By doing this, citizens learn about the importance of basic research for society. The more-than-100 people who participated in this workshop also had the chance to use magnifying glasses to differentiate the genus and genotype of different individuals from this species.

Both in this workshop and in the rest of the activities that formed part of the 4th edition of the UB’s Science Festival, the work of scientists was highlighted and an explanation was given as to how research affects progress in society.
