The IEB organizes a conference to debate the energy market

The Barcelona Institute of Economics (), part of the UB and located at the Parc Científic de Barcelona, will organize a conference entitled "Gas and Electricity: Towards a European Energy Regulator?" Sponsored by the European Commission and Gas Natural SDG, this conference aims to debate the reform of the energy market, which is currently being restructured both at national and European level. Directed particularly at representatives from the energy sector, regulatory agencies and economists, this event will be held on 22 and 23 September in the Auditorium in the Mapfre Tower in Barcelona.

The conference will include the participation of leading academic experts from Europe and the U.S., as well as representatives from gas and electricity firms, regulatory agencies and governments. Presentations will include proposals on issues such as strengthening regulation in the European Union (EU), independent regulators, the role of sub-national powers, and the energetic objectives of the EU.

The opening sessions will be given by the Minister for Industry, Tourism and Commerce, José Montilla, the director of the IEB, Martí Parellada, and the president of Gas Natural SDG, Antoni Brufau. There will be two guest lectures by the director of the Dept. of Economics of the University of California, Richard Gilbert, on “Institutional Aspects of Electricity Liberalization”, and by the director of the Dept. of Applied Economics at the University of Cambridge, David Newbery, on “Perspectives of The Internal Energy Market in The European Union”. The closing session will be given by Antoni Castells, Minister for Economics and Finances, Generalitat de Catalunya (Autonomous Government of Catalonia).
