The Barcelona Science Park to host the Consolider Meeting on Health and Biomedicine

Last Friday March 13, the Barcelona Science Park (PCB) hosted the "Consolider Meeting: A Source of Innovative Ideas on Health and Biomedicine". The workshop –with free admission and organized by the PCB and the Directorate General for Programmes and Transfer of Knowledge of the Ministry of Science and Innovation (MICINN)- was inaugurated by the rector of the University of Barcelona, Didac Ramírez; the director general of the MICINN's Office of Programs and Knowledge Transfer, Otilia Mo; the coordinator of the Research and Innovation in Health Sciences Programme of the Ministry of Health of the Government of Catalonia, Carles Miquel, and Jesús Purroy, director of Research and Innovation of the Barcelona Science Park


The call included the intervention of the coordinators of eleven Consolider research projects that are are currently being carried out related to Health and Biomedicine, one of the seven thematic areas in which the 57 Consolider projects are grouped. The speakers included Ricardo García Ibarra, of the Nanoscience Research University Institute of Aragón; Miguel Beato, of the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG); Pere Puigdomènech, of the Laboratories Consortium of the Higher Council for Scientific Research-Institute of Agrifood Research and Technology (CSIC-IRTA) of Vegetable Molecular Genetics; and Ginés Morata, of the “Severo Ochoa” Molecular Biology Centre (CSIC-UAM).

Other research groups and companies pertaining to the sector- such as Neuroscience Technologies, Intelligent Pharma, Almirall Laboratories, Oryzon Genomics and the Division of Biomedicine of the Leitat Technological Centre, located at the PCB- as well as representatives from the Centre for Technological and Industrial Development (CDTI), The Spanish Platform of Innovative Drugs (IMIM-PRBB) and the Spanish Association of Biocompanies (ASEBIO)participated in the meeting.

The meeting is framed within the within the “Consolider: A source of Innovative Ideas” program, a series of meetings organized by the Ministry of Science and Innovation in different Spanish cities to build relationships and facilitate communication across the research community, the companies participating in Consolider projects, any parties interested in participating in future calls, and other key players from the scientific, academic and business communities.

Consolider is a strategic action –lasting five years and with an average funding of 5 million Euros per project – The objective of the Consolider programme is to make progress in original research lines aimed at excellence and internationalization.It is framed within the Government’s strategic initiative Ingenio 2010, to bridge the gap between Spain and its surrounding countries in terms of R+D+I efforts. Consolider is aimed at consolidated research groups that lead science and innovation in Spain: groups engaged in research work lines on the edge of knowledge and with demonstrated previous quality outcomes, as well as with an accredited trajectory within the international scientific community.
