The ambassador of France and a delegation from this country meet with representatives from the PCB and UB to promote new collaboration agreements

A French delegation, chaired by the ambassador of France in Spain, Claude Blanchemaison, and representatives from the Parc Científic de Barcelona(PCB, Barcelona Science Park) and the Universitat de Barcelona(UB, University of Barcelona) met on Tuesday 23 January to consider several lines of institutional collaboration in teaching and research. This meeting is the fruit of a programme of activities that was agreed in the France-Spain Forum, held in November 2006 in Girona, and which involved a group of researchers and teachers from both countries.

Involving the director and deputy director or the PCB, Fernando Albericio and Montserrat Vendrell respectively, and the vice-rectors of International Policy and Mobility at the UB, Mar Campins, and Scientific Policy, Carmen Muñoz, the meeting addressed several lines of cooperation in fields such as student exchanges, through the Erasmus-Picasso programme, collaboration between universities in the European Space for Higher Education, and the development of a business school jointly managed by the two Spain and France. This school would produce professionals to promote the economic relations between France and Spain as well as with north Africa and South America.

Regarding research, mention was given to cooperation through European projects such as NATIBS (New Approaches and Tools for Incubated Biotech SMEs), Nanodialogue and the Council of European BioRegions. Participants also proposed to strengthen collaboration between France and Spain in key fields such as biomedicine, particularly research into cancer, nanotechnology and nanoscience. Moreover, the development of two new research institutes based in these two countries was discussed.

Collaboration between Spain and France seeks to enhance research, and thereby strengthen the Southern European Pole of excellence; to speed up the adaptation of the European Space for Higher Education and Research; to strengthen relations between the university and the private sector; and to increase cooperation with Mediterranean countries and South America.
