A study on autism done at IRB Barcelona in the running for the “Vanguardia de la Ciencia” Award Blog Post

For the fifth consecutive year, the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona) based in PCB has been nominated for the  “Vanguardia de la Ciencia” Award, thanks to research into autism, done in collaboration with the Centre for Molecular Biology “Severo Ochoa” (CBMSO), joint center between the Superior Council of Scientific Investigations (CSIC) and the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM). The work in question established that the CPEB4 protein, which coordinates the expression of hundreds of genes necessary for neuronal activity, is altered in the brains of patients with this neurological disorder.

 

Whole Genix wins the 2018 Mediterráneo Excellente Prize for Medical Innovation Blog Post

The company Whole Genix, headquartered in the Barcelona Science Park, received the 2018 Mediterráneo Excelente Prize in the Medical Innovation category. This award was received during the gala marking the IV edition of these prizes, held on Friday in Hotel Arts in Barcelona. With these awards, the editorial group El Suplemento aims to assess and highlight entrepreneurial, scientific and cultural talent, as well as social and charity initiatives undertaken by companies, institutions and professionals from the Mediterranean Arc.

 

Fundación GAEM launches its inclusive charity campaign ‘Yo Doy mis Pasos’ Blog Post

GAEM Foundation, headquartered in the Barcelona Science Park, launches its inclusive charity campaign Yo Doy mis Pasos’ [I give my steps], which aims to raise 1 million euros to promote biomedical research in multiple sclerosis, an incurable neurodegenerative disease which affects around 8,000 people in Catalonia and 50,000 in Spain. It is also the second biggest cause of disability in young people in developed countries after road accidents.

 

IBEC and IRB Barcelona projects awarded funds from the 2017 edition of La Marató de TV3 Blog Post

Yesterday, La Fundació  Marató de TV3 announced the 36 projects awarded funding in the 2017 edition of the telethon, dedicated to infectious diseases. Among them is a project headed by Ernest Giralt, from the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona) and Jordi Vila, from the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal), and two projects led by Xavier Fernandez-Busquets and Antonio Juarez from the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC).

 

The UTOX-PCB Unit renews and extends its certificate of compliance with Good Laboratory Practices Blog Post

The Unit of Experimental Toxicology and Ecotoxicology of the Barcelona Science Park has renewed its certificate of compliance with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) for the conduct of all types of in vivo and in vitro toxicology studies, mutagenicity studies and ecotoxicity studies involving medicinal products for human and veterinary use, medical devices and cosmetics. The site has also extended the certification for microbiological studies of bactericide efficiency.

Today, Monday 2 July, the Barcelona Science Park (PCB) has kicked off its 18th Research in Society programme with the opening of the pre-registration period for the experimental workshops “Discover research!” and “Do research!”. Places will be allocated to applicant schools in a draw using the list of reservation numbers.

 

IBEC PhD student receives Daniel Bravo scholarship Blog Post

Jesús Ordoño, PhD student at the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC), based in the Barcelona Science Park, is one of just three winners in the 2018 call by the Daniel Bravo Andreu Private Foundation grants, which aims to to stimulate high impact biomedical research in Catalonia with scholarships to researchers (in possession of a doctorate, bachelor’s degree or equivalent) who carry out their activity in Catalonia and who wish to make short stays at leading centres in their field in North America or Europe.
